Hahnemühles environmental responsibility cannot be separated from the company's history. Our production site is located in the middle of a centuries-old cultural landscape with natural habitats. The closeness to nature shapes our actions and therefore

- We have built on closed material cycles in the production of paper
- We have built on closed material cycles in the production of paper
- We put stricter standards on the quality of our process and waste water, as is required by law
- We give the preference to the use of recycled raw materials where this is possible without loss of quality (E.g. block rear wall, giant in shock, or roller sleeves)
- We include only primary fibres, which were not treated with bound chlorine
- We view that pulp obtained by us originates from sustainable cultivation (certified according to FSC, PEFC and similar)
- We use rapidly renewable raw materials (bamboo, bagasse *)
- We bring all waste to a recycling
- We use only electricity from water, wind- and solar energy
- We use only natural gas to produce our process heat
- We continuously monitor environmental protection regulations by a company officer

WE CERTIFIED THAT OUR BRANDS ARE ENVIRONMENTALY FRIENDLY.

Since the paper industry requires a great deal of water and fibres, ecology plays an important part in Clairefontaine's company strategy. All the paper pulp comes from forests certified for their environmentalfriendly management. Clairefontaine actively participates in the development of French forests, by managing several hundred hectares of fir and spruce trees in the Vosges mountains.

With regards to the paper mill itself in the Etival Clairefontaine region, it is still as dynamic 150 years after its conception. Self-sufficient for 80% of its electrical consumption, the mill also has its own biological installations for water treatment, and has been rewarded a “Water trophy” by the State.

Naturally, Clairefontaine notebooks can be completely recycled. Every step of the product life cycle is taken into account, from the wood selection, to the manufacturing process, to the finishing of the product.

Our paper production is controlled under specific ecological criteria:
- Energy consumption, air pollutants and water usage are reduced during paper manufacturing.
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and dangerous substances in inks, glues and other solutions are used limitedly
- Systematic waste treatment is applied to collect reusable materials.
- Finished products are recyclable and made from renewable materials.
